 What is Amazon?

The American multinational technology company Amazon.com specializes in cloud computing, digital streaming, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce. One of the most valuable brands in the world, it has been called "one of the most significant economic and cultural forces in the globe." Along with Alphabet, Apple, Microsoft, and Meta, it is one of the Big Five American technological firms.

Amazon was first established as an online bookstore, but it has since evolved into a web-based economic firm that primarily specializes in offering services related to e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The company, which employs an Amazon-to-buyer sales strategy, offers a staggering selection of products, making it possible for customers to purchase almost anything, including clothing, accessories, gourmet food, jewelry, books, movies, electronics, pet supplies, furniture, toys, gardening supplies, and household goods.

Amazon has regional websites, software development centers, customer support centers, data centers, and fulfillment centers spread out over the globe. Amazon is headquartered in Seattle.

A chronology of Amazon's history

Since it was established by Jeff Bezos on July 5, 1994, in his Bellevue, Washington, garage, Amazon has gone a long way. Here is a brief overview of Amazon's development from a small online bookstore to a global conglomerate of commerce.

On July 16, 1995, Amazon became a legally recognized online bookseller. Cadabra was the name under which Bezos initially incorporated the business; later, the name was changed to Amazon.

For the benefit of alphabetic placement, Bezos is rumored to have searched a dictionary for a word starting with A. As a nod to his intention for the company's magnitude to resemble that of the Amazon River, one of the largest rivers in the world, he chose the name Amazon since it was unusual and exotic. The company's mantra has been "grow large fast" ever since it was founded.

Amazon Prime was launched in 2005. Free two-day shipping inside the 48 contiguous states is provided by this subscription-based program for Amazon users, in addition to incentives for reading, shopping, and streaming. The current cost of an Amazon Prime membership is $14.99 per month or $139 per year, according to the company's website.

Amazon Web Service

A decade later, in the 2000s, came the development of this extensive and dynamic cloud computing platform. The initial Amazon Web Services products were released in 2006 to offer online services for websites and client-side applications. The foundation of the business' expanding suite of web services is Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and Simple Storage Service. A cloud computing and video-on-demand service called Unbox was also introduced by Amazon that year.

With the introduction of its first Kindle e-reader in 2007, Amazon changed not just how people purchased books but also how they read them. The Kindle Store is made easier to browse, purchase, and read with the usage of this device.
